The Building Resilience Against Violent Extremism (BRAVE) measure is a brief questionnaire tool that can be used to assess risk and protective factors for young people’s resilience to violent extremism. The measure was developed and validated as part of a collaborative research initiative between the Alfred Deakin Institute for Citizenship and Globalisation, Deakin University (Australia) and the Resilience Research Centre, Dalhousie University (Canada).
Resilience is generally understood to be an individual's ability to overcome adversity and continue his or her normal development. In the BRAVE, we use a more ecological and culturally sensitive definition. Dr. Michael Ungar, Director of the RRC, has suggested that resilience is better understood as follows:
